A green card is issued to an individual to show that he/she is a legal permanent resident of United States. This card open a lot of door for an individual for example, an individual can take up employment with any employer without restriction. Also one can become eligible for government loans, for business or even for studies.

Being a green card holder or legal permanent resident enables one to apply for citizenship after only five years of residency in the united states, one can also apply for citizenship after three years if they are married to a US citizen, being a citizen entitles one to more rights than being a permanent resident for example the right to vote, the right to be elected in public office, getting into Jury duty.

According to US laws, one can only obtain permanent residency (green card ) through the following:

  • The diversity Lottery program
  • Through employment : This basically is when one is given a green card because he/ she has exceptional abilities in a particular field like athletics, science, education etc or if one is classified as a special immigrant like religious workers preachers etc
  • From a family member: One can also obtain a green card from family members, especially if one is a spouse, child (under 21) or parents of a US citizen
  • Through Investments in the US
  • Through provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act

Every year the diversity lottery program issues around 50000 immigrant visas to various people around the world. This is normally based on country of birth, those countries that have low immigration to the US. A person who is selected for this program is given a chance to apply for permanent residency, if he wins then he/she and his/her spouse and any children under 21 receive visa for entry to the US, which also allows the individual to live and work in the US permanently.
